Tips and Tricks for Better ALEKS Course Management

Q. What course should I place myself or my student in?

A.

Correct course placement can be challenging, but ALEKS has created K-12 Course Recommendations by Grade to assist you with your decision. Whether the student is working above, below, or at grade level, ALEKS has provided suggestions for your student's progression through the ALEKS K-12 mathematics curricula.

View Course Recommendations

Please note: After a student takes the initial ALEKS assessment, we recommend moving the student to a higher course level if his/her pie is more than 90 percent full, or moving the student to a lower course level if less than 10 percent is complete.

Q. How do I move myself or my student from one course to another?

A.

With an ALEKS Independent Use subscription, the student has access to the full ALEKS course library. While the student can only take one course at a time during the subscription, you may move the student into another course at any time by using the Master Account, or by using the Options page within the Student Account.

Master Account:

  1. Log in to your Master Account.
  2. Under "Action" click "Edit student."
  3. Using the drop-down menu labeled "Course," select a new course for the student.

Q. How do I enable QuickTables in an existing Student Account?

A.

ALEKS QuickTables is a research-based math fact mastery program for multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction for grades 3 and up.

Current ALEKS customers with students enrolled in LV 3, LV 4, LV 5, and Essential Mathematics courses will automatically receive access to QuickTables.

Current customers with students enrolled in other ALEKS courses can enable QuickTables by following the below instructions. If you don't see the "Add/Activate QuickTables" option when following the below steps, please contact ALEKS Customer Support and they can add the program to your account.

To enable QuickTables using the Master Account:

  1. Log in to your Master Account.
  2. Click "Edit Student" under Actions, next to Student Name.
  3. Under QuickTables, please select the tables that you would like to make available to the student.
  4. Click "Edit QuickTables Settings" to modify the default program settings.
  5. Select "Save" to put changes into place.

Please note: This option is only available if you DO NOT have a Master Account.

  1. Log in to your Student Account.
  2. Click "Options" in the Navigation Bar.
  3. Select "Activate QuickTables."

Note: QuickTables will be available after the student completes the initial ALEKS assessment in the regular ALEKS course.

Q. How do I add another student to my existing ALEKS account?

A.

ALEKS can create multiple student accounts within a single Master Account, which allows you to manage all of your students from one place. Additionally, by managing all of your student accounts from one Master Account, you can take advantage of the ALEKS Family Discount Program.

To add a new student to your Master Account:

  1. Log in to your Master Account.
  2. Click "Add Student Account" and enter student information under "New Student Users."
  3. Click "Checkout."
  4. Enter payment information and accept ALEKS user agreement.
  5. Click "Purchase."

If you do not remember your Master Account log-in information or do not have one, please contact Customer Support.

Please note: Discounts are applied automatically when you purchase multiple 6-month or multiple 12-month accounts within a single credit-card transaction. If the accounts are NOT purchased at the same time, the discount will only apply to subsequent accounts and not the original account until it is renewed.

Image Theresa Johnson - Homeschooling Parent
Cape Coral, FL

Scenario: Uses ALEKS as core curriculum to homeschool her son
Time Spent in ALEKS: 30 minutes per day, 5 days per week
ALEKS Course Products: Mathematics – LV 5
Overall Experience:
My 6th grade son began to struggle in math in 3rd grade; we had to hire a tutor from his school to assist him. This year, we began homeschooling, and math time was heartbreaking. It was difficult for me to watch him struggle and see his frustration with new concepts. I heard about ALEKS on a homeschooling website, and decided to try the complimentary 1-month trial. During our trial, my son had zero frustrations! My son is still doing his math with ALEKS, and he actually enjoys it. He can practice as much as he needs and he feels good about math and the progress he is making! Thank you ALEKS!

What challenges did your student face in math prior to using ALEKS?
My son was easily frustrated with new math concepts that were not quickly mastered. As a result, I was looking for a fresh, innovative approach to math that would engage my son's senses, while providing him with the tools he needed to master new concepts with confidence.

What math progress have you seen in your student since using ALEKS?
ALEKS has opened up a whole new area in my son's life. I have never seen him happy to be working on math before. He is able to master new concepts without becoming frustrated and is confident in his math skills. He can't wait to show me his ALEKS pie chart and how much progress he has made.

Joanne Webb - Parent
Ontario, Canada

Scenario: Uses ALEKS as a supplement for her daughter
Time Spent in ALEKS: 1 hour per day, 3 days per week
ALEKS Course Products: Algebra 1
Higher Ed Classroom

Overall Experience:
My 9th grade daughter struggles with dyslexia and is failing her math class. While I no longer homeschool, I still belong to a homeschool website and was introduced to ALEKS through it. A family emergency called me out of town during my daughter's math midterm, so I was unable to help her study. Rather than hiring a tutor last minute, I had my daughter spend a minimum of 3 hours in ALEKS using the complimentary 1-month trial. As a result of her practice, she passed her midterm with 65%! I know this doesn't sound like much to most people, but to her it was quite an achievement! Even her teacher was surprised. When I returned from my trip, I immediately purchased ALEKS for all three of my children. Additionally, my daughter's teacher reviewed the program, and is going to allow her to use it in the classroom to help reinforce lessons. If you have a child like mine that learns by doing and needs hands-on help, you ! can't beat ALEKS!

What challenges did your student face in math prior to using ALEKS?
My daughter has dyslexia so she really struggles in math. Word problems and memorization of long sequences are a nightmare for her, causing her to quickly "tune out."

What math progress have you seen in your student since using ALEKS?
ALEKS has made a world of difference for my daughter. We are new users, and already she feels more confident in her math skills. My daughter has a better understanding of concepts that are presented in class, and she is able to retain information at a higher rate.
