Kimberly Merline - Homeschooling Parent
Ashburn, VA
Scenario: Uses ALEKS as core curriculum to homeschool two children
Time Spent in ALEKS: 1 hour per day, 5 days per week
ALEKS Course Products: Mathematics – LV 3, Mathematics – LV 4, and Mathematics – LV 5
Overall Experience:
I have searched for years to find the right math program to fit for our homeschooling needs. I never felt confident that my children had really learned the math that they were studying. They would pass a quiz or test and would move on to the next topic, but I never felt confident that they understood the material.

With ALEKS, this has really changed. The review is so thorough that I feel confident that my children have learned and understood the topics they have encountered. My children feel so accomplished when they complete an ALEKS pie! The fact that my children get immediate feedback about each problem they attempt is the key to our satisfaction; it makes a dramatic difference in my children's comprehension and retention levels.

Finally, the fact that I NEVER have to grade their work is such a relief! Sometimes I almost feel guilty, as if I am not doing enough to teach my children math, but then I remember that they are learning more math than they ever have before.

What challenges did your students face in math prior to using ALEKS?
One of my sons has trouble remembering what he has learned and needs a lot of repetition and extra practice. With most of the math programs we tried, I found that I had to supplement the problems provided in order for him to learn the concept - this created a lot of extra work for me. With ALEKS, my son was able to catch up in math, and covered two years of material in less than a year.

My other son is a math whiz. Prior to ALEKS, I never found a math program that was right for him, so I was putting together my own materials for him. However, ALEKS, allows him to quickly move through the concepts as he masters them and he is not held back by unnecessary review. I check on him periodically, but he is fairly independent now with ALEKS.

What math progress have you seen in your students since using ALEKS?
Both of my sons feel a great sense of satisfaction when they complete an ALEKS pie. We make a big deal out of it and go out to dinner to celebrate! My son who struggles in math has completed two years of math in less than a year, while my math whiz son is now two years ahead of grade-level. I plan to use ALEKS next year with my third son who will be entering high school.

Farshad Keyghobadi - Returning Student
San Francisco, CA
Scenario: Uses ALEKS as a personal supplement
Time Spent in ALEKS: Varied
ALEKS Course Products: Algebra 2 and PreCalculus
Higher Ed Classroom

Overall Experience:
I used ALEKS as a supplement to my college course instruction. ALEKS allowed me the opportunity to study at my own pace, which was especially helpful because I was working full time and could not dedicate myself to school on a consistent weekly basis. Additionally, I found that after using ALEKS, I was better prepared than the majority of the students in my class. The step-by-step explanations provided by ALEKS were more than adequate and really enhanced my understanding of the material.

What challenges did you face in math prior to using ALEKS?
Prior to using ALEKS, I had difficulty paying attention in class. Occasionally, I would space out and miss an important example that the professor provided.

What math progress have you experienced since using ALEKS?
I needed to pass my math class as a requirement for my degree, and ALEKS helped me to do that! I am satisfied with the progress that I made in ALEKS and feel like I really learned the material.
