Kapolei High School
Kapolei, HI
Scenario: Teaching Students of Varying Levels and Abilities
Grades: 9-12

Rachel Fronzo, Teacher
"I teach in an alternative program that services students of varying levels and abilities. The individualized curriculum that ALEKS offers has been very beneficial to both me and my students. I have noticed struggling students are now more confident and willing to help other students on concepts they have recently mastered. I have also noticed significant improvement in student ability and motivation."

How did you structure your class periods with ALEKS?
The first ten minutes of class consist of a consumer math activity (usually a reading and worksheet exercise). Students then receive announcements, hand-in homework assignments, and record new homework for the following day. Students are required to use ALEKS a minimum of 2 hours per week. If we are unable to work on ALEKS during class time, students are then required to make up the time at home.

Are there any practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
I recommend having students spend as much time in ALEKS as possible. While students are working on concepts in ALEKS, the teacher may offer additional help to struggling students. The one-on-one time spent with each student motivates and creates a great learning environment.

How did ALEKS fit into your grading system?
Student performance in ALEKS, homework/class work (including ALEKS worksheets and consumer math activities), and ALEKS tests/quizzes all contribute to the student's final grade. Grades are based on the following breakdown:

Progress in ALEKS: 25%
Homework: 25%
Class Work: 25%
ALEKS Tests/Quizzes: 25%
