New State Standards Reporting by Class, School, or District

K-12 teachers and administrators can now monitor class, school and district progress toward state standards mastery.  State standards reports display the average number of standards mastered by students in the class, school, or district.  These reports are available with ALEKS elementary and middle school products with state standards integration.  Teachers can access class state standards reports in the Basic Teacher Module under "Reporting".  Administrators can access school and district state standards reports in the Advanced Teacher Module under "Server Stats".

Success Stories
Gary Oakland with Student

Hilltop Middle School
San Diego , CA
Scenario: Computers in Classroom
Grades: 7-8

Gary Oakland , Teacher
“I really like using the ALEKS program with my students. I have had great success using it with afterschool and Saturday students for math recovery.  I have also used ALEKS for extra credit for advanced students when they finish their homework early. I have used it for summer school, which is like math recovery. I am currently using it full time for math support. It works great with all of the above situations.”

How did you structure your class periods with ALEKS?
I use ALEKS for my Math 7 Support classes. My three classes use ALEKS for approximately 80 - 100% of their class time, five days per week. I use overheads about twice a week with 3-6 warm-ups with either basic math or math concepts that the students are getting in their regular math class. After the warm-ups, I like to conduct short quizzes in ALEKS regarding the warm-ups, then the students work on ALEKS problems of their choice. I like to give my students three opportunities to complete their quizzes over the course of two days.

How did you structure your classes to encourage 3 hours of ALEKS use per week?
For the first ten minutes, I have my class do a brief warm-up using the overhead, covering topics that correlate with state standards. The warm-ups also consist of basic math concepts such as multiplying, dividing or fractions. Students will then work on an ALEKS quiz that covers the warm-up topic. They then have the option of working in ALEKS on any topic they like. Students usually complete 1-2 quizzes per week and students spend the rest of class time filling in their individual ALEKS pies.

Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
As a teacher, the feature that I am most impressed with is the quiz feature. I think other teachers will be impressed as well. Correlating teaching with state standards is something we all strive to do as teachers and ALEKS makes this easy. Using an overhead, I work together with the class to solve warm-up problems that coincide with problems they are currently working on in ALEKS. I have the students do a short quiz once or twice a week in ALEKS to work on these warm-ups. I keep the quizzes short and give students three opportunities to earn a higher grade.

Please share any success stories that you are proud to have achieved through the use of ALEKS.
One of my current students has completed 85% of Algebra using ALEKS without ever being in an Algebra class. Another 7th grade student would not do any homework for any teacher in our school, including me. I told her she could do the ALEKS program if she would complete my class work every day. She started doing her work for me and then started working for her other teachers so she could work on the ALEKS Program. In another instance, I had a teacher send me 12 EL Spanish students every day during my lunch period to work on ALEKS in Spanish because these students were failing math due to the language barrier. I don't speak Spanish, but I found it very easy to use the bilingual capability of ALEKS to help these students do better in math.
