Improved ALEKS Textbook Integration

A selection of popular textbooks can be easily integrated with various ALEKS course products. When you choose to integrate a textbook with an ALEKS class, a custom syllabus aligned with the textbook will be automatically assigned to your class. This syllabus can be revised by the teacher using the ALEKS Content Editor or by working with ALEKS Customer Support.

The textbook integration feature places textbook references on the ALEKS Explain pages, showing students where each topic is covered in their textbook. In addition, the content of the class is divided into units corresponding to the chapters of the integrated textbook. You can assign due dates to your students for these units and quickly create chapter quizzes. Combined with chapter completion dates, the quizzes help motivate your students to complete their work on time.

King City R-1 School District: King City Elementary School
King City, MO

Elementary Classroom

Scenario: Classroom with 5 computers
ALEKS Portion of Curriculum:
50%
Time Spent in ALEKS:
1.5 hours per week - 30 minutes per class period, 3 days per week
ALEKS Course Product:
Mathematics LV 3-5

Anita Gilbert, Teacher
I teach a math class for Title I students in grades 3-5. We have 5 computers in the classroom for students to use, and few students with Internet access at home. ALEKS fits wonderfully in our situation! My students love to use ALEKS; on days that they are not scheduled to work in ALEKS, my students are always asking if there is time at the end of the lesson to use it.

Implementation

How did you implement ALEKS?
I use ALEKS as a supplement to our school's classroom curriculum. I don't cover ALEKS topics in a particular order; I prefer to follow the recommendations that ALEKS provides based on the students' abilities.

Many of my students do not have Internet connections at home, so I do not require them to work on ALEKS for homework, but I do encourage them to work on ALEKS as often as they can outside of the classroom. In order to accomplish this, I inform the parents about ALEKS at the beginning of the year and during parent/teacher conferences. Recently, I have also created a Parent Night to allow students to demonstrate the program to their parents.

How do you structure your class periods with ALEKS?
I have a limited number of computers in my classroom, so I divide the class into groups, or "stations." Generally I have several students working on ALEKS, with the remaining students practicing math skills with me. In my lectures, I re-teach topics that students have had difficulty with either in ALEKS or in classroom instruction.

Grading

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS? If so, how is this progress measured and what is the amount of progress that they are responsible for completing?
At the beginning of the year, I set ALEKS goals with each student. Rather than working toward a certain grade in ALEKS, students work toward the goal that has been set. I use the reports in the Teacher Module to assess student progress and to illustrate growth for students and their parents.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen?
Prior to ALEKS, our students were moving through math courses without fully mastering the concepts taught in the course. When a student came to a concept that required knowledge of a previous concept, they just didn't have it.

Now after using ALEKS, my Title I students are showing a high level of mastery in areas that we haven't even covered in class yet. My students love to see their pie charts fill up, so they work hard to master a concept and demonstrate more motivation than ever before. My students ask me to use ALEKS!

Best Practices

Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
We have a limited number of computers in my classroom, so I have divided my classroom into stations, and have set up a bulletin board with the day's station assignments. By looking at the bulletin board, students know if they are working with me, or if they are working on ALEKS. Additionally, for students on ALEKS, the bulletin board notifies them of the skills that they should be focusing on that day.
