What is an ALEKS course product upgrade?

ALEKS course products, such as Middle School Math 3 or Algebra 2, are all being continually monitored and analyzed for ways that they can be improved. Improvements to these course products may be intended to make your students' progress smoother and more efficient, to enhance compatibility with textbooks or state standards, or to increase the value of the product in a variety of other ways. Many of these improvements are transparent, in the sense that they don't disrupt the use of the product in any way and do not require any action on the user's part. Others may require a new version of the course product. When a new version is required, we announce that an "upgrade" of the course product is available.

New versions or "upgrades" of ALEKS course products are free of charge. Normally, they are announced by email messages to all of our users and by bulletins appearing in ALEKS educator accounts, with information about the changes in the new version, and the user is encourage to schedule the upgrade at a convenient time. The upgrade can be scheduled by contacting ALEKS Corporation Customer Support and telling us what date you would like it to occur. The upgrade affects all courses (past and present) at your school or campus that use this course product, so the decision of when to upgrade should be taken by the faculty as a group. Once you tell us the date, it will take place at midnight on the date you specify. Upgrades cannot be reversed.

If you do not schedule the upgrade, it will take place automatically at a "default" date for the upgrade given in the original announcement. The default date is chosen at a time when most users are on vacation and between terms.

Upgrades to course products may alter the coverage of the course and so modify the standard pie chart display that is used to show student and class progress. When the upgrade is of this nature, all reports for that course, past and present, will be modified in accord with the new coverage. Students may need to take a new assessment after the upgrade. For these reasons, it is usually preferable not to upgrade when a term is in session and the students are working to complete their pie charts or portions of them. Also, customizations to the courses may be modified, and should be reviewed after the upgrade to be sure that they still meet your needs. We are happy to assist with this.

Finally, in some cases the upgrade to a course product may require re-installation of the ALEKS plug-in. This depends on the nature of the upgrade as well as on the time that has passed since your last plug-in installation. In general, it is a good idea to reinstall the ALEKS plug-in from time to time, whether or not it is needed for new course product versions.

What is an ALEKS plug-in upgrade?

Upgrading the ALEKS plug-in means re-installing the current version of the ALEKS plug-in. Please note that the current version of the ALEKS plug-in has no necessary relation to the current versions of any course products; these are two separate things, although sometimes you need a new plug-in to use a new course product version. The ALEKS plug-in can be upgraded or re-installed simply by going to the ALEKS Home Page:

http://www.aleks.com

and clicking on the button marked "Downloads" toward the upper right-hand corner of the page. For lab installations, it is sometimes convenient to use the MSI file provided:

http://www.aleks.com/downloads/win_jvm

There are frequent improvements to ALEKS which depend on the current plug-in version (modifications to the interface or system tools, etc.), so we generally advise re-installing the plug-in at least once a year, even if there is no new course product version that requires it. Changes to the plug-in do not always mean that the version number of the plug-in has changed. We do our best to time changes to the plug-in so that users can re-install it around the new year or mid-summer.

Sometimes, a new course product version requires a particular version of the plug-in. In this case, we will communicate this dependency to users when the new course product version is announced. If you upgrade to the new course product version and need a new version of the plug-in to support it, re-installation of the plug-in will be initiated automatically when you try to use the course product. Obviously, it is preferable to do the plug-in re-installation ahead of time when a new course product version requires it.
