- ALEKS is a precise assessment tool.
- ALEKS provides highly targeted instruction that offers topics based on
assessment results.
- ALEKS gives immediate feedback in learning mode.
- ALEKS is a full-featured course management system with rich reporting
features.
Currently, ALEKS is available for a wide range of course
products.
Interactive Tutorial
After registering with ALEKS, the student learns how to use the input tools
by taking a brief, interactive tutorial.
Assessment
Once the student is familiar with the ALEKS answer tools, the student may
take a personalized interactive assessment.
In most of the business courses the initial assessment is optional.
Pie Chart
Following the initial assessment the student receives their report in a
color-keyed pie chart. In the "pie" each
"slice" corresponds to a particular area of the syllabus, such
as "accounting cycle" or "bonds, investments and cash
flow". The degree to which the slice is filled by a darker color shows
the extent to which the student has mastered that area. The report describes
the student's current knowledge of the subject and makes precise recommendations
for further study. Each slice of the "pie" may be opened to produce a list of
the concepts on which the student can choose to work.
Learning Mode
By clicking on any of the items suggested by the system, the student makes an
immediate transition out of the report and into the ALEKS Learning
Mode. Learning Mode provides practice problems and offers explanations
of concepts and procedures.
Immediate Feedback
Students will also receive immediate feedback and offer suggestions for
correcting mistakes.
Review
During Learning Mode students will also have the ability to review recently
worked through items.
Worksheet
Students and Instructors also have the ability to print out 16 question
worksheets generated based on the student's current knowledge as additional
practice or review.
Instructor Module
When you log on as an instructor you gain immediate access to the
Instructor Module of the ALEKS system.
The "How do I's" are a series of mini tutorials for you, the instructor. This
will allow you to learn many of the ALEKS functions more quickly.
Course Reports
ALEKS provides a variety of kinds of information of the students of a
particular course: time of last ALEKS session, duration of all sessions,
performance, and other stats. The bar graphs allow instructors to quickly view
each student's performance at the time of their last assessment (in blue), the
progress they make in the Learning Mode (in green), and the extent of the
material remaining to be learned (in yellow).
Student Report
An instructor can examine a comprehensive report of any student. This will
show the students' personal pie, list what they know and what they are ready to
learn as well as showing their full progress history in bar graph form.
Take a Quiz
The quiz feature in ALEKS allows an instructor to choose any topic in the
course. The quizzes are independent from the students work in thier
personal pies.
