ALEKS is an online system for the assessment and individualized teaching of a variety of subjects. It is accessed over the World Wide Web on any suitable computer and is designed to allow the monitoring and management of entire courses and colleges. Based on an accurate profile of the student's current knowledge, the system is able to offer material that the student is best able to learn at a given time. The ALEKS Learning Mode includes explanations and algorithmically generated practice problems, ongoing assessment of student knowledge, an online dictionary, and facilities for review and collaborative help. It can be used on an independent basis or as a supplement to classroom instruction.

The ALEKS system is the product of years of cutting-edge research into the mathematical modeling of human knowledge (See Chapter 10).
