ALEKS - Assessment and Learning

Implementation Strategies

Our success stories encompass a wide variety of implementation models and best practices, from lecture-based to emporium labs to course redesigns. The flexibility of ALEKS made it simple and effective for these schools to improve their student success rates, and they are willing to share their strategies.

Scenario: I use ALEKS in a traditional course without a textbook.
Purpose: Core Curriculum
ALEKS Course: Beginning Algebra

MaryAnn Manuel, Tutor Coordinator/Instructor
I enjoy using ALEKS; it frees up my time so I spend more time with individual students. I no longer put my students to sleep or talk a foreign language to them. Students begin the course grumbling, but by the end of the semester, they actually enjoy the class and working on ALEKS. I've noticed a marked increase in attendance and homework completed, as well as less student frustration. I've also noticed an increase in students succeeding in future math classes, especially when they take another math class the following semester after my class.

Implementation

Please describe how you implement ALEKS into your course curriculum.
ALEKS is required for homework. Students are required to put in five hours per week, turn in an assignment for each class, and keep a journal of all their computations and notes from lectures. Students are graded on the time worked on ALEKS, content mastered on ALEKS, their journal, five ALEKS quizzes, and their percentage improvement from their initial assessment to their last.

Do you cover ALEKS topics in a particular order?
No. I plan quizzes on topics they have all mastered.

Do you integrate a textbook with your course using ALEKS Textbook Integration? Please describe how you set up your chapter completion dates.
Yes.

How often do you use the ALEKS Instructor Module?
I use the Instructor Module frequently throughout the term.

How do you incorporate ALEKS Quizzes into your course?
I give ALEKS quizzes every two to three weeks or a total of five per semester. I plan quizzes on topics all the students have mastered. Students have one chance to take the quiz. Graded quizzes are handed back to make notes on problems they missed. They then have two days and two attempts to retake the quiz as homework to improve their grade if they choose.

How do you incorporate ALEKS homework assignments into your course?
I allow students to print ALEKS generated worksheets for homework and grade them on correctness.

How do you incorporate ALEKS scheduled Assessments into your course?
I schedule ALEKS assessments for the mid-term and final exam.

How do you modify your regular instructional approach as a result of ALEKS?
I no longer put my students to sleep or talk a foreign language to them. Students begin the course grumbling, but by the end of the semester, they actually enjoy the class and working on ALEKS. My teaching is now more brain-friendly with short lectures and lots of practice and self-earning in ALEKS.

How do you use information from ALEKS to focus your teaching?
I regularly use the class pie report, weekly time report, quizzes, and homework. I email the class weekly.

Grading

What percent of a student's grade does ALEKS make up?
60 percent.
