My experience with ALEKS is very positive. After implementing ALEKS, it is clear that students have an improved self-confidence. Students really like the option to work at their own pace, and student performance has improved because ALEKS ensures that students prove competency and mastery before allowing them to progress.
What challenges did your students or institution face prior to using ALEKS?
It is extremely difficult to differentiate instruction across the various student skill levels.
Was ALEKS used in your course with all students or with targeted students?
Number of students who used ALEKS for the course and term:
Number of sections: 4
Number of students per ALEKS section: 24
Total students enrolled in this ALEKS course: 96
How do you structure your course periods with ALEKS?
My course is structured around daily labs with lectures before online quizzes.
How often are students encouraged or required to use ALEKS?
Days per week: 4
Hours per week: 8
Do you cover ALEKS topics in a particular order?
Yes. I use textbook integration and follow the order of the chapters. However, I still allow students to choose any order from the topics available to them.
Do you integrate a textbook with your course using ALEKS Textbook Integration? Please describe how you set up your chapter completion dates.
Yes. I use textbook integration. I split nine chapters among 15 weeks of class. Most chapters are open for a week while others are open longer due to the number of topics.
How often do you use the ALEKS Instructor Module?
I use the Instructor Module daily throughout the term.
How do you incorporate ALEKS Quizzes into your course?
In order to ensure that my students are able to see all of the topics in ALEKS prior to the end of the semester, I use quizzes to guide their learning. Often, students miss topics because we move from chapter to chapter on a fixed schedule. When the new chapter begins, only chapter-relevant material is made available assuming the students have mastered the prerequisite topics. ALEKS quizzes help to balance student learning as I can incorporate new or prerequisite material.
How do you incorporate ALEKS scheduled Assessments into your course?
I use the scheduled assessment at the end of the semester to have students complete a cumulative assessment.
How do you modify your regular instructional approach as a result of ALEKS?
Because I can monitor student progress more effectively, I now allow students a chance to get through material independently before I cover the topics in lecture so that all students are afforded time to see the material.
How do you use information from ALEKS to focus your teaching?
I monitor the results from student practice quizzes and pie charts in order to see how my students are progressing. I also review reports when grading the quizzes I assign, as well as track their weekly hours spent in ALEKS.
What percent of a student's grade does ALEKS make up?
ALEKS makes up 58 percent of the student's course grade.
