Our success stories encompass a wide variety of implementation models and best practices, from lecture-based to emporium labs to course redesigns. The flexibility of ALEKS made it simple and effective for these schools to improve their student success rates, and they are willing to share their strategies.

What challenges did your students or institution face prior to using ALEKS?
The university had low student attendance and did not offer enough courses. Students were not prepared for the courses they enrolled in; many were not successful in math in high school and arrive with a very negative attitude.
Was ALEKS used in your course with all students or with targeted students?
I used ALEKS with all students this semester.
Number of students who used ALEKS for the course and term:
Number of sections: 1
Number of students per ALEKS section: 27
Total students enrolled in this ALEKS course: 27
How do you structure your course periods with ALEKS?
I conduct a short lecture followed by an ALEKS lab where I help students individually.
How often are students encouraged or required to use ALEKS?
Days per week: 2
Hours per week: 3
Hours per term: 45
How often do you use the ALEKS Instructor Module?
I use the Instructor Module daily throughout the term.
How do you incorporate ALEKS Quizzes into your course?
I use ALEKS quizzes during my lectures. I set up a quiz on my Student Account and project it up on the board. These are the problems we use for examples during the lecture.
How do you incorporate ALEKS homework assignments into your course?
The homework is just to work on the ALEKS pie chart. Worksheets are optional but encouraged as a good review for students without computers at home.
How do you incorporate ALEKS scheduled Assessments into your course?
I give a cumulative scheduled assessment for the midterm and final. The midterm is not graded but used as a guideline to indicate to the student if they have made satisfactory progress up to the midterm. The students are graded based on the results of their final assessment.
How do you modify your regular instructional approach as a result of ALEKS?
I am lecturing much less and students are all working at their own pace on their own topics. I am the guide on the side if they get stuck; otherwise, I let them try to figure it out on their own instead of spoon feeding them.
How do you use information from ALEKS to focus your teaching?
Students look at their ALEKS Progress Report daily - how much time they have put in and how much progress they have made. I use the Last Week time log as I have to report "attendance" - which to me is how much time they have put in, not necessarily in class. I also use the Student Progress Report to pick topics to work on with students individually, and the Class Average Ready to Learn Report to select lecture topics.
What percent of a student's grade does ALEKS make up?
Which ALEKS course product(s) have you used in the past?
Beginning Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, College Algebra, Trigonometry
