Correct course placement can be challenging, but ALEKS has created K-12 course recommendations by grade to assist you with your decision. Whether the student is working above, below, or at grade level, ALEKS has provided suggestions for your student's progression through the ALEKS K-12 mathematics curricula.
Please note: After a student takes the initial ALEKS assessment, we recommend moving the student to a higher course level if his/her pie is more than 85 percent full, or moving the student to a lower course level if less than 15 percent is complete.
With an ALEKS Independent Use subscription, the student has access to the full ALEKS course library and can complete an unlimited number of courses during the subscription period. While the student can only take one course at a time, you may move the student into another course at any time by using the Master Account.
To move a student to a new course using the Master Account:
ALEKS content is always based on particular course products intended for use at specific levels of Math study, such as "Math Level 3" (3rd Grade Math), "Middle School Math 2," "Pre-Algebra," or "Trigonometry." The ALEKS content designers begin by mapping out the coverage of the course in ALEKS with at least two goals in mind. First, the course content has to be comprehensive enough to cover what is included in practically all textbooks for the subject and in all applicable state standards. Second, there needs to be enough material built into the course at a lower level that the great majority of students enrolled in the course will be able to get the review they need to fill in gaps in their readiness. Then, the topics constituting the course are chosen so that the coverage is appropriate, and so that all possible learning paths within the content are provided for. Every step or transition between topics that a student may need to follow must be there; there can be no gaps in the connections running through the material, from top to bottom. In general, ALEKS content has a high degree of granularity, and topics are defined quite specifically. Most course products contain between 200 and 350 topics or "items."
Most of the course products offered by ALEKS are not new, and have been used by customers for a number of years. When this is the case, the content of the course will also reflect feedback that we have received from the users concerning what should or should not be included in the course, and how it should be presented. It will also reflect data that we have gathered ourselves from large numbers of students, indicating the degree of success students have had in particular parts of the curriculum. All of this information is used for continuous improvement of ALEKS content.
Keep in mind that ALEKS has two ways of measuring a student's knowledge: by assessment, and by progress made in Learning Mode. As a rule, assessment is a stricter and more accurate way of determining what a student really knows. So, the first time a student fills in the pie chart to 100% completion, an automatic assessment will be triggered to check the student's knowledge of the course contents. Most of the time, the student will not get exactly 100% on that assessment (it is very hard to assess at 100%). After the assessment, the student will be able to work again through the material where extra work was needed. If this was 20 items or fewer, in most cases there will be no further assessment, and when the student hits 100% the second time, he or she is through. If it was more than 20 items, there may be additional assessments along the way before the student is done. ALEKS is trying to make sure that the student does have substantial mastery of the course materials, without causing undue frustration. When the student has completed, there will be a congratulatory message, and the student's pie chart will remain 100% full. The student can use the "Review" button to continue working on course topics, or the student can be moved to a new (more advanced) ALEKS course using the Master Account. The amount of time to complete an ALEKS course varies very widely. If the student is placed in a subject matter where their level of mastery is already high, it may require only a few hours. At the other extreme, it is not unusual to see students spending 100 hours or more to complete a course; these are mostly cases where the student was placed into a subject matter too advanced for him. As a general rule, anyone should count on spending at least 40 hours in ALEKS to complete a single course product.
ALEKS QuickTables is a research-based math fact mastery program for multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction for grades 3 and up. Current ALEKS customers with students enrolled in the courses Mathematics - LV 3, Mathematics LV 4, Mathematics LV 5, or Essential Mathematics will automatically receive access to QuickTables.

This $1.00 amount is an authorization request, not a charge. We process the amount to authorize credit cards for the amount due at the end of the term. Once we verify that the credit card is valid, the $1.00 amount will be released back into your account.
The Master Account is an account used to create and manage student accounts in ALEKS. It can also be used to check on the progress that students are making. The Student Account is the account used by the learner to improve mathematical knowledge. If a child is using ALEKS, the Master Account is typically accessed by the parent or tutor, and the Student account by the child. With adult learners, the same person may use both accounts. Note that the Master Account is provided free of charge when students are registered to use ALEKS. There is a charge only for individual Student Accounts.
An Independent Use Account may be canceled at any time prior to the next payment due date by following these instructions for each Student Account you would like to cancel:
After completing the survey, click on the "Yes" button to cancel future payments for this Student Account. A confirmation email will be sent to you that contains the actual date the cancellation will be effective (immediately prior to the next payment due date).
There are three ways that review is provided in ALEKS. First, your child is automatically reassessed by ALEKS at regular intervals, according to the progress she makes. Automatic assessments occur whenever your child has added 20 new items to her pie, or if she spends 10 hours in ALEKS without an assessment. Automatic assessments check her retention of topics she has worked on; if review is needed for any of these topics, she will have to redo the topics following the assessment. Also, every time your child logs on to ALEKS for the first time in a given day, she will be offered topics for review. She should do this review before picking something new from her pie chart. Finally, she can click the "Review" button in her account at any time to review material from her past sessions.
It is a great temptation to assist your child when he is working in ALEKS, especially at younger ages. It is always fine to help them with using the computer or with using ALEKS system tools. Also, it is OK to assist your child with math questions if he runs into difficulty in the Learning Mode. You should be careful that the child is doing most of the work himself, however, and only help with points that he really doesn't understand. You should **never** assist your child during an ALEKS assessment. Even the slightest help in assessment could make the assessment results inaccurate, reducing the effectiveness of ALEKS in guiding his learning progress. The role of the parent during assessment is to make sure that the child does not receive help, has pencil and paper, and does his best on all the assessment questions. The button for "I haven't learned this yet" should only be used on topics that really are unfamiliar, or that your child has forgotten!
Because ALEKS is designed to give learners only the topics they are truly prepared for, they can usually master new topics relatively quickly, without a great deal of repetitive practice. If the child makes no mistakes at all on the practice problems, only 2-3 will be required in most cases. If there are mistakes, the number of practice problems may be greater. In any case, we want the learner to answer correctly at least twice in a row before moving on, so that there will be a solid foundation for learning new material. The child's retention of this topic will be checked the next time there is a reassessment, and if review is needed it will be provided following that assessment.
Most of the time the learner will be successful in learning a new topic offered by ALEKS, even if there are mistakes along the way. You and the child should take advantage of the resources ALEKS provides to assist with this, especially the Explanation. If there is difficulty, sit down with the child and go over the explanation to make sure she is understanding it. Occasionally, however, the new topic simply will not "click" for the student at a particular time. If it is obvious that the child is not making headway, ALEKS will tactfully suggest working on a different topic and redirect the child to the pie chart for a new choice. The child can then choose to work on a new topic and return to the more difficult topic at a later time.
