Overall Experience:

My boys have autism disorders, but they are all doing very well with ALEKS. The simplicity of the design and interface provides few distractions, and has helped my boys succeed, even with their disabilities. They enjoy completing their pie slices and opening new areas of their pie charts to work on. QuickTables is also very effective for my youngest son, as he has severe dyslexia and a sensory disorder. We have been very pleased with ALEKS, and plan on using it again next year.

What challenges did the student face in math prior to using ALEKS?

Because my sons suffer from autism disorders of various degrees, finding curricula to meet their needs has been challenging. My oldest son is self-taught and ready to move into Trigonometry, but his dyslexia prevents him from succeeding with textbooks and computer based programs that have distracting graphics. On the other hand, my younger son needs choices. ALEKS accommodates both of their learning styles and skill levels; the excellent and simple interface, as well as the various options ALEKS gives my boys, allows them to succeed in math.

What were you looking for in an online math tool?

I needed a math program with thorough explanations that would allow my sons to work independently, without being too distracting.

What math progress has the student experienced since using ALEKS?

ALEKS has been a positive experience for my sons. They have all done well, and have made excellent progress in the program. It is really good for them to get math feedback from a source other than me.

How does the student feel about his/her progress in ALEKS?

My oldest son has always been the more confident of all of my sons, but my middle and youngest sons have shown great improvements in their confidence levels since using ALEKS. Being able to work independently, control their learning, and monitor their own progress has shown them that they can succeed in math.
