Overall Experience:

I love, love, love ALEKS for my 9 year-old gifted student! I quickly learned that I no longer have to grade math, and you also can't beat the price of ALEKS. My son always finishes at least two years of math in one year (or several complementary programs) and now he can finish as many ALEKS courses as he wants, without me having to purchase more materials. The immediate feedback provided by ALEKS allowed my son to learn right away to read the explanations thoroughly when he made an error. This thoroughness allowed him to make progress, and he learned that it was OK to use the Explain button if he did not understand a topic in the beginning. ALEKS is always right on target regarding what he should be learning so we have eliminated the whining over material being too difficult AND doodling all over the page when there is not enough mental stimulation. Furthermore, I don't have to try to set the pace to suit him anymore because ALEKS is student-directed; my son gets to choose what he learns, which he loves! ALEKS' regular assessments put the topics he does not remember back into his pie for him which increases his retention of the material. Another great thing about ALEKS is that it is not visually overwhelming; the program only displays one problem on the screen at a time so whether he is going to solve two problems today or 200 he doesn't freeze up. The program has also made math fit into our day better because I can give my son a timer and tell him "Go to it." Before we had some days where math took five minutes and others where it took an hour or more. I love the ALEKS progress reports that tell me what he is learning and what comes next. It is just one more example of easy documentation that I don't have to make. It is such a relief to me to have math take no time for me, and have my gifted student love it simultaneously.

What challenges did the student face in math prior to using ALEKS?

Too much repetition, not enough variety.

What were you looking for in an online math tool?

A program that was self-paced and able to review topics not remembered.

What math progress has the student experienced since using ALEKS?

My 9 year old son finished Mathematics Level 6 six in only three months and is now almost 80 percent finished with Middle School Math Course 1. He is finally able to go at his own pace.

How does the student feel about his/her progress in ALEKS?

My child loves ALEKS! He has always been great and confident in math. Now he is able to learn more about topics I would not have even considered introducing at his age.
