Elizabeth Oblinger, Teacher
My kids really enjoy the self-paced program. I appreciate the mix of review material and new content for them to practice. Computation scores have increased and recall of previously learned materials is better than I've seen in years of teaching. They treat ALEKS like a reward, and are always anxious to use it.

Scenario

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
We had low scores in basic computation.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
4 days per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
15 minutes.

Implementation

How do you implement ALEKS?
ALEKS is used during intervention.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
No.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
After students are done with core work, they move on to ALEKS during intervention time while I'm reteaching in small groups.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I reteach to small groups.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
Never.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
I don't.

Grading

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
No.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
No.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
Computation scores have increased and recall of previously learned materials is better than I've seen in years of teaching. They treat ALEKS like a reward, and are always anxious to use it.

Best Practices

Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
I'd like to analyze ALEKS data more and use that for small group interventions.
