Samantha Romeo, Teacher
I love ALEKS. It's a great program that is individualized. My students love it and are excited about math. They beg to get on the computers every day! Students are excited when they complete a pie slice in ALEKS or get a new game to play in QuickTables. Their test scores have also improved.
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
My students didn't like math very much.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
4 days per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
I began using it as part of our interventions or for students who already know the skill I am teaching.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
Students complete the pie that is being covered during a nine week term. The course my students are working on depends on what my unit tells me to teach.
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
Half of the students get on ALEKS, while the other half do interventions with the teacher and then they switch groups. Sometimes I use it for the kids who did well on a test, while I am reteaching and retesting other classmates. I also use ALEKS for the kids who understand the concept being taught, so they get to work on other skills.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
As often as possible.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
I send newsletters home letting parents know about the program and inform parents about it during conferences.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
No, but I reward students who do.
