My students are motivated to extend their mathematics training. The ALEKS interface is easy to use. Good job!
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
We struggle to provide opportunities for students scoring at the highest percentage level. No Child Left Behind (NCLB) benchmarks are also increasing, which makes it even more difficult to achieve high scores.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
4 days per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
Students work with ALEKS for 30 minutes before school, four days per week.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
No. Students are free to move around their pie at their leisure.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
I remind students that they have the option of working at home every couple of weeks.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
We encourage parents to engage with their students and let them know that they are free to enter the classroom at any time.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
ALEKS is assigned in addition to their regular homework.
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
ALEKS is not incorporated into our grading system.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
We do monitor progress, motivation, and effort. If a student doesn't meet our expectations, they are dropped from the group.
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
ALEKS students have continued to show outstanding growth in mathematics. My returning students are really motivated to get started. We just finished week one of our seven month program.
Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
I encourage students that are experts in certain areas to help other students who are just starting the program or those that need assistance. This is particularly useful since I have third through sixth grade students.
