Rina Horgan, Teacher
ALEKS is a great program for students. It is easy to set up and follow our math curriculum. Students are able to practice skills we work on in the classroom. It is fun, inviting, and challenging for students.

Scenario

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
Our challenges were low test scores and students not knowing basic math facts.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
2-3 days per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
15-30 minutes.

Implementation

How do you implement ALEKS?
In the beginning of the school year, I show my students the functions in ALEKS.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
I customize ALEKS to work with what I am doing in the classroom.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
Students come in early, before school, to work in ALEKS. They also work in ALEKS if there is free time during the day.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
We ask them to work on ALEKS every day, but it is not a requirement at this time.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
We send home a flyer at the beginning of the year explaining ALEKS to the parents.

Grading

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
Some students do not have Internet access at home, so this is not possible.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
I do not incorporate ALEKS into my grading system at this time.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
Student grades have improved on Acuity, Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress (ISTEP), and in the classroom. QuickTables is awesome to help students learn their multiplication facts quickly. This helps them with the foundation to build other math concepts. Students love watching their pie charts grow with each piece of knowledge they acquire.
