Anita Gilbert, Title 1 Facilitator
I feel that this program is wonderful. My students love to use ALEKS. On days that they don't get to, they ask if there is time at the end of the lesson to use it.
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
Students were coasting through concepts without mastering or retaining them, which resulted in them being unprepared for the next skill.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
3 days per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
I use ALEKS as a supplement to the classroom curriculum.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
I don't cover ALEKS topics in a particular order. I follow the recommendations of ALEKS and the abilities of the students.
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
I have several students working on ALEKS, while the others are practicing skills with me. I reteach concepts that they are having trouble with on the program, or what they are having difficulty with in the regular classroom.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I am more of a facilitator now than ever before.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
They are encouraged to work on ALEKS as much as they can. I have no set requirements because some of my students do not have Internet access at home.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
I sent notes home with student at the beginning of the year explaining ALEKS. I have also communicated with them during parent/teacher conferences and am planning a Parent Night to have the students show their parents how ALEKS works.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
ALEKS is not a homework responsibility.
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
I do not give grades, but I do use the reports to show growth.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
We have goals to show progress, but I do not require a certain amount of progress.
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
Students are showing mastery in areas that we haven't covered before in my Title I Math class. They love to see their pie charts fill up, so they try really hard to master concepts.
Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
I have set up a stations bulletin board. The students know if they are working with me or on ALEKS each day and what skill is to be worked on next.
