Amanda Selfridge Shortall, Teacher
We have been using ALEKS in our multi-age middle school classroom for children with special needs. I like being able to access the data and use it to inform my instruction. I can tailor my lessons to each student's needs. They love to see their pies get bigger! It's been great!

Scenario

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
There was no solid math curriculum in place when I came to the school, so I implemented ALEKS as our core curriculum. Students' needs in the multi-age classroom are diverse and I needed something I could tailor to meet their needs.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
3 days per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
Varies.

Implementation

How do you implement ALEKS?
I just jumped in and started doing it.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
No.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
I work individually with students while the others use ALEKS.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I use the data to inform my instruction.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
As homework, three times per week or whenever they like.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
I send letters home. Parents are supportive, and luckily all have Internet access at home.

Grading

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
Yes. It is 50 percent of their math homework.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
Our grading system is not like a traditional school's.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
No, but I monitor progress.
