ALEKS has been good. It is nice to have a tool that monitors student progress.

Scenario

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
We tried Study Island and it wasn't accurate.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
2 days per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
30 minutes.

Implementation

How do you implement ALEKS?
We use it in the classroom for a half hour, and then the students are assigned their math homework through ALEKS.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
Currently, we do not work in any order.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
Students are supposed to get on ALEKS at least once a week. The teacher is responsible for logging them in and making sure that they work their half hour.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
As a result of the initial ALEKS assessment, we now have a guide to instruct our teaching.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
We haven't encouraged home use as of yet, but anticipate allowing the students to work from home soon.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
Parents were informed of ALEKS at the Parents Back-to-School Night. We have also sent letters home to inform parents on how they can help their children cover ALEKS.

Grading

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
Yes. The students use ALEKS worksheets as the math portion of their homework. It is completely individualized right now.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
The data we take from ALEKS is used directly on their report cards. We instruct and then the student goes to ALEKS and that is where mastery is shown. It covers about 25 percent.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
Yes, but we only measure progress in terms of time spent in the program.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
It has been up and down. We've had to move students down a grade level which has worked to their advantage.
