Susan Fink, Talented and Gifted Teacher
We have a student who mastered the 6th grade curriculum in math, and we did not have a teacher licensed to teach 7th or 8th grade math. We introduced the ALEKS online experience and it has been great for us. I like the ability to monitor what the student has mastered and how much time was spent on each class, while the student has been pleased with his progress.

Scenario

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
We did not have a teacher licensed to do what we needed to do for our students, and transporting the student to the public middle school was not an option for us.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
5 days per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
40 minutes.

Implementation

How do you implement ALEKS?
It is used it as an alternate to transporting select students to the public school.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
No.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
The student just uses ALEKS.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I usually teach a lesson and then give practice so I just acted as a mentor in this case.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
Whenever the student wanted to.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
I did not ask for much parental involvement but the parents were pleased that there was something to challenge the student.

Grading

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
No.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
I monitor what the student is doing and make sure he is making progress. If I see the student is avoiding a particular area, I meet with the student to discuss this.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
My student has encountered new topics in ALEKS that he did not know and has been able to easily get an explanation of how to approach that particular problem. My student has been pleased with his progress.
