Sherri Ward, Math Coach
As a math coach for the past year, I have had a wonderful experience helping students in 3rd-5th grades on the ALEKS program. The feedback from students has been valuable. Students have gained a deeper understanding and grasp for math standards. They enjoy working at their own pace and emailing me their individual progress and comments. They are ecstatic about the availability to come to the lab and work on ALEKS during their success time. Some students have even completed entire courses. Parents have also spoken highly of the access to the program.
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
They were not always challenged at their level. The program addresses the individual very well.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
2.5 days a week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
As a new math coach, I tried out the program with students who were not enrolled in another computer intervention program. I was able to utilize it among the higher level students to suit their individual abilities.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
No, I use it to supplement their grade level program. They work at their own pace and on the topics they need to fill more on their pie.
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
I have students enrolled who need an extra push and enrichment in math. They are pulled as a group to work in the computer lab.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
ALEKS has been a great addition to our curriculum. I was able to see individual strengths and weaknesses in all the students who had the program available to them.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
I encourage them to work on it as much as possible, and reward the students who have the most time logged in.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
I have a parent night to explain ALEKS to parents and show them how to access the program from home.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
No, it is strictly voluntary.
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
As a math coach, I do not give grades. However, I would include it as part of a grade if I were to go back into a general classroom setting.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
No, it is strictly their own encouragement to get better in math.
