Bridget Talbot, Special Education Teacher
I have used ALEKS in my classroom for two years now and have found that my special needs students really enjoy using it. I have found that it is easy for my students to follow the directions. I like the way the program will modify each new skill to the student's ability level. It is very convenient for the students because they can work on it at home and in school. It is wonderful that I can also check students' progress from home, and create tests and quizzes. The reports are also a great resource when meeting with parents during conferences.

Scenario

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
My special needs students were not getting enough time to practice a new math skill. ALEKS gives them the opportunity to work on a skill at their own pace until they have mastered it.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
3 days per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
20-30 minutes.

Implementation

How do you implement ALEKS?
I introduced it as a whole group lesson.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
Yes, the students must work in the area we are currently studying, and then they can work in the area of their choice.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
I teach the whole group a skill. Then we split into smaller groups, and I reteach/reinforce the skill while my Paraeducator supervises the students on ALEKS.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I work with smaller groups so that my instruction is more focused on the needs of individual students.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
I encourage students to work on ALEKS nightly.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
Through notes and conferences.

Grading

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
It is not a set homework assignment because some of my students do not have access to a computer at home.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
Because of other commitments at this time, I do not use ALEKS in my grading system. The results are discussed with the parents during conferences.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
No, because of restraints on time and access to computers, both in my classroom and at home.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
My students love to work in ALEKS. They love the idea that they can work on it at home and share their work with their families. I have seen great improvement in my students' ability to solve basic facts.

Best Practices

Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
I have my students use notebooks to do problem solving, and there are manipulatives available at every computer for the students to use.
