St. Mary's School of Littleton, Private
Littleton, CO Grade(s): K - 8 Scenario: Online School, Home Access Purpose: RtI, Supplement ALEKS Portion of Curriculum: 100% Time Spent in ALEKS: 1 hour per week ALEKS Course: Mathematics - LV 3 (with QuickTables), RtI 8 Theresa Kovar, Resource Teacher I use ALEKS as a supplement with students in my Tier 3 math class. My students have to log at least one hour a week on ALEKS, in addition to their regular homework. This gives them the opportunity to practice and maintain skills while we move on to different concepts. I am very pleased with ALEKS, as are my students and parents.
Scenario What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS? Differentiating instruction for individual students. How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS? Varies. What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used? Varies. Implementation How do you implement ALEKS? ALEKS is used for supplemental practice at home for a minimum of one hour per week. Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order? They work on sections of the pie that go along with current class topics and continuously work on previously covered concepts. How do you structure your class period with ALEKS? ALEKS is used at home for one hour a week. How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS? I haven't because the program is used as a supplement. How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home? At least one hour per week. How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS? I send home progress printouts with skills to work on next highlighted. Grading Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it? Yes. ALEKS is about 30 percent of a student's homework. How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system? My grading breakdown is: tests are 40 percent; homework is 30 percent; and performance in ALEKS is 30 percent. Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS? I haven't needed to because the students are making progress and setting their own goals. Learning Outcomes Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen. My students are retaining concepts that are essential for more advanced concepts. The practice on ALEKS is great for re-teaching (clearing up misunderstandings) and retention of concepts. My students are also very encouraged by the progress they have made. They check out the progress bar after each assessment to see how much growth they've made, and how much farther they have to go. They are motivated to complete the entire pie before school is finished. |
