Maya Sissoko, Teacher
ALEKS has been great for our students. They can move at their own pace, and it allows for differentiation much more easily than having to create individualized plans for every one of my students. The instant feedback motivates the kids to want to do better and keep working.
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
It was difficult for teachers to provide enough differentiation as often as ALEKS can; students weren't able to get immediate results or have their questions asked in the moment and in an individualized way. With ALEKS, students can work at their own pace and have fun at the same time.
How do you implement ALEKS?
We use ALEKS as homework for 30-45 minutes per week along with the in-class math curriculum.
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
The students mostly use ALEKS at home for homework or in class when we have Academic Choice Time once a month.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I didn't have to modify my teaching approach.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
Students work in ALEKS at home for 30-45 minutes per week; sometimes it's more and sometimes it's less.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
Yes, ALEKS is one quarter of the homework load.
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
We don't give grades at our school.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
Yes. As long as students are moving forward in the program, that is acceptable.
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
Many of my students who need more direct teaching and practice have improved greatly since using ALEKS. Students feel better about their math abilities and are able to see the results, which is very inspiring and motivating.
