ALEKS is a great tool to utilize with our students who need that "extra boost" in mathematics. The students enjoy the program because they are engaged with technology on a daily basis. This is our second year implementing the program, and our school had a student complete the entire fifth grade course this year! He was so excited!
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
A challenge we faced was many students failing the state-mandated assessment.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
5 days per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
ALEKS is done during the last period of the day when the other students are also working on math skills. This is an extra instructional period during the day.
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
We do ALEKS at the end of the day. It is another class period when the entire school works on math.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
We have not modified our teaching approach except to add the Concrete-Representational-Abstract (CRA) method.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
I encourage students on a daily basis.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
We have a science and math night where parents can come in and review the program.
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
We do not count ALEKS as a grade.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
Yes, the goals are set based on the abilities of each student in the program.
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
Students are reinforcing skills that they learn in the classroom with their teachers. Most of the students have made tremendous progress.
