ALEKS has been great. The students are generally using it individually and it was used quite successfully over the summer. Some teachers are beginning to use it with more advanced students in their classes, and we have a student that is using it as part of her Individualized Education Program (IEP).

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
Summer meant students stopped doing any kind of math and this was a cause of concern for parents and teachers.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?

How do you implement ALEKS?
I am teaching science this year and do not have the opportunity to implement ALEKS with my students. However, I am working with other classroom teachers to help them get ALEKS going with certain students.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
The teachers are having students select topics on their own, but also trying to keep the students working on the same concepts as students in class who are not using ALEKS.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
Students are encouraged, but most have not used it as frequently as they did during the summer.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
Parents were encouraged to try the 48-hour trial in order to see firsthand what ALEKS is like. Also, I encouraged parents to read about the successes of ALEKS at a local school.

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
According to teachers using ALEKS with certain students, they are monitoring and requiring students to show activity, but there is not a consistent amount of work required among those using the program. It varies by student.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
Students using (or having used) ALEKS seem to be a little more confident in their mathematical skills.
