Miranda Zousel, Extended Learning Program Teacher
I use ALEKS as an enrichment tool for my second and third grade Extended Learning Program (ELP) students, and I have been thrilled with the results. I have seen students gain confidence in their math skills as they see their pies grow. When my students log into their account, they say "Look at my pie, Mrs. Zousel!" They get VERY excited about their personal progress.

Scenario

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
The ability levels of math groups were varied, so I had to find a happy medium with my instruction. I was given only 20 minutes for math twice per week, so I needed to make the most of my time, and regular activities weren't meeting my students' needs.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
2 days per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
25 minutes.

Implementation

How do you implement ALEKS?
After I saw that ALEKS would be a successful fit in my classroom, I decided to use it as my sole curriculum, as it aligns itself with our state standards.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
No.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
Students come for math after their literacy enrichment time and are ready to go with their ALEKS username, password, and scratch paper.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
With such little time to work with students, I had to choose between regular teaching and ALEKS. I chose ALEKS.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
They are ALWAYS encouraged to work on ALEKS at home for 1-2 hours in order to get in 2-3 hours during the week between home and school work.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
Parents are aware of ALEKS and know their student's username and password. I send home printed reports to share with the parents and keep an open line of communication to answer any questions they might have.

Grading

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
ALEKS is not assigned as homework.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
I don't use ALEKS as a grading tool.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
I do not require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS.
