Sara Tucker, Teacher
I have two regular education students and one special needs student using the ALEKS program. I have seen amazing growth and a thirst for knowledge from my special needs student! He loves the opportunity to go far beyond the regular curriculum and dive into his favorite subject, math.

Scenario

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
I didn't have an extension to serve those who are above grade level.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
2 days per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
30 minutes.

Implementation

How do you implement ALEKS?
ALEKS is used as an extension during our math skills intervention time.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
Students currently work in ALEKS independently and are able to do it during our math skills intervention time.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I didn't modify much. I am just able to spend more time with the students who need more assistance while those who are above the topic level work in ALEKS.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
Students are encouraged any time they use ALEKS.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
We encourage students to use the program at home and ask parents to encourage their student throughout their progress.

Grading

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
I don't offer a grade because it is an extension activity.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
Not so much. ALEKS is used as an opportunity to further their learning.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
I have seen amazing growth beyond the standard curriculum. My students are more excited about math and want to share what they have learned with those around them. They love knowing that they have just a bit more knowledge about a topic. They also enjoy not being bored with the regular assignments.
