ALEKS provides individualized instruction to students. It provides exposure and instruction on topics so that students can work at their appropriate level. I am so impressed with the knowledge it has given my students that I personally bought it for my son at home.

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
I found that students were being taught subjects that were not appropriate because they had not mastered the basic skills needed.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
5 days per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
60 minutes.

How do you implement ALEKS?
The teachers continue to use the math program the school adopted, and also give their students 45-60 hours of additional math time on ALEKS.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
Yes, Number Sense is the first part of the pie that the students need to work in.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
I work in small groups or individually on a topic that is within the student's weakness.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I read the data and evaluate which students are struggling, and then I meet with them to do a mini-lesson with direct instruction to help them master the topic. They each take notes in an ALEKS notebook.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
We hold an informational workshop for the parents.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
I have seen students understand more concepts at higher levels. The students love to see their pie grow and how much they have learned. They challenge each other, as well as themselves.

Best Practices

Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
Provide the students with an ALEKS notebook, and encourage them to click on the Explain button before asking for help. Being accountable for their learning is an important component of the ALEKS program.
