The ALEKS program really helped my students by providing a supplementary program that I could not have done because I had other students. I love that it's designed for the student to be independent and progress at his or her own natural rate. My students have progressed in all areas, some more than others, but all have made some progress. They enjoy seeing their pies increase.
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
The students were designated "at-risk," but in a class of over 30 students, there was no way I could supplement the lesson in order to meet their special needs.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
1 day per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
When my students come to math lab once per week, the ALEKS students immediately log on and stay on the program for the entire 45 minutes.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
No, the students choose what they want to work on.
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
Students are on the program while others do the lesson. They stay on the program for the entire time.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I do not modify my approach.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
Every time I see them. I give prizes for reaching certain amounts of hours.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
Letters and occasional phone calls.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
I do not incorporate ALEKS into the grades.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
My students have progressed in all areas, some more than others, but all have made some progress. They enjoy seeing their pies increase.
Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
Parental involvement is very important. Also, give little prizes for hard work and progress.
