Rebecca Mike, Teacher
I use ALEKS with my students in Mathematics - LV 3 and Mathematics - LV 4. The students log on every day after they have finished their lesson and book work for a chance at additional practice. I like that it gives them more practice that is aligned with the same topics we are learning in their textbooks. It also gives me a chance for more one-on-one time with some of my struggling students while others are actively engaged in meaningful practice. The data that is provided gives me another assurance of whether or not they "got it" rather than simply marking them proficient on a skill after a single lesson in their book. I have also used it for additional Response to Intervention (RtI) time with one of my students who uses ALEKS under the supervision of an aide, in addition to the regular math period.

Scenario

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
Since we are a small school with multiple levels in one classroom, it is hard to keep one group busy while you are working with another.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
4 days per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
20-25 minutes.

Implementation

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
I use the textbook alignment.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
Students can go on ALEKS after they finish with their lesson and book work.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I haven't modified my regular teaching.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
No, because my students do not have Internet access at home.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
I print the reports to share at parent-teacher conferences.

Grading

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
No.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
ALEKS is not a part of my grading system.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
No.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
All of my students have been making progress. It has been a big help with several of my students who are very capable but unmotivated. They hurry and finish their lessons so they can get more time on ALEKS. Students are also excited to see their pies get filled in!
