I like ALEKS.
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
ALEKS was being used at our school when I arrived. Before that, they were using NovaNET.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
3 days per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
We examined standards and determined which were most important. We then chose a textbook and ordered the chapters to teach most important standards first.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
We cover topics based on the standards we deem most important.
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
Our classes are made up of mostly ALEKS work, with 20 minutes of instruction and practice on state standards.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I had to learn to release control and have faith in ALEKS.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
We require our students work an extra 2-3 hours per week at home. We set a goal for students to master approximately 3 percent each week.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
Our school has mandatory parent/teacher/student meetings every six weeks to monitor progress.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
Mastery of ALEKS accounts for 70 percent, with lab attendance, worksheets, and math notebooks accounting for an additional 10 percent each.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
We set a goal for percent mastery and help the students work towards that goal.
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
I feel like my students are more successful using ALEKS, and I think the students feel good about the program.
Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
Experiment with assigning "chapters," as it really helps them focus on a topic. You can assign chapters and set them to be due at any time you wish. This still keeps them focused, but forces students to complete one chapter before they can begin another.
