ALEKS is exactly what I needed to supplement my curriculum. The program allows students to work at their own pace on the skills they need. It is perfect for those students ready to attain higher level skills and for those who need more independent practice. I love it!
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
The students who were ready for more did not have a systematic program set up so that they could work successfully on their own. The Explain button in ALEKS really helps the students be much more independent.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
3 days per week.
How do you implement ALEKS?
I assign topics from the students' pies depending on what topics we have been working on.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
Yes, I require them to work in a particular order.
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
My fourth grade students work in ALEKS for 25 minutes, three times a week. My fifth grade students set progress goals and work in ALEKS independently at the end of class and at home.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I modify my teaching on an individual basis as the students need help.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
For those who use ALEKS at home, the parents are very involved in making sure their child is working on their assigned pie slices. In addition, we email back and forth daily.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
Yes, but only if students do not meet their goals. We offer learning lab before and after school where students often go to complete assignments.
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
We use a standards-based grading system, so I check off skills as students master them in ALEKS.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
Students set individual goals that I approve. After we have covered a topic in class, I expect them to complete that piece of their pie.
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
I have seen more than a year's worth of growth for half the students in my class over a three month period. Math comes easy to my gifted students and they are very driven to work on their ALEKS. I have my struggling students set weekly goals to keep them positive and motivated.
Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
ALEKS really allows students to work at their pace and at the level that is right for them. Last year, I had students in my fifth grade class who were working anywhere from a third grade level to an Algebra level. No program other than ALEKS allows for that much differentiation. Additionally, ALEKS is at the same rigor that the Common Core State Standards will require.
