Many of my remedial math students use ALEKS twice weekly. The students are excited to be in a position where they can keep track of their progress. Students beam when they complete their pie and receive a certificate on completion. In a time of cuts for education, ALEKS has proven to efficiently and successfully build skills for students in need of extra support.
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
It is always tough to service every child who is in need when there is only so much teacher support.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
2 days per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
Students who receive low scores on assessments are given an ALEKS account.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
No, students can select from a given number of areas.
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
ALEKS is utilized during an extracurricular period when students receive all extra support, such as speech, occupational therapy, physical therapy, remedial reading, remedial math, etc.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
There was no need to modify.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
We encourage them to work at home as much as possible. Parents are reminded, too.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
Parents want their children to do well, and this is one more tool to help parents help their children.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
ALEKS is not used for a grade.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
This is different for each student.
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
Students' learning outcomes have improved since we started using ALEKS. Often teachers don't have the time to update students about the progress or lack of progress they are making. With ALEKS, I feel that students are pleased to be able to see their own progress. I believe this makes the students strive to complete a specific skill group. A sense of accomplishment builds self-esteem as well as increases scores.
Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
Teacher training was essential to have the students be successful. I strongly recommend that you try it.
