Kevin Royce, Teacher
I have found ALEKS to be helpful in determining and helping students with the things they struggle with in math. I especially like that I can help the students at their level. The students enjoy the fact that the math is on the computers, and I enjoy that I can work with the students at their pace. I especially like the amount of information that can be collected about a student's mathematical ability. This information can easily be used to document student progress, as well as drive instruction.

Scenario

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
We had problems with computation and number sense.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
5 days per week

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
1 hour

Implementation

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
It is used as a supplement at this point. The kids use it in the learning lab.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
I have encouraged parents to sign their kids up for the summer.

Grading

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
Not this year.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
For some students, the program has been engaging enough to turn them on to math where they were not interested in the subject before. Students seem to enjoy the fact that they can instantly see the results of the effort they put into the program. They also enjoy working at their own level and pace.

Best Practices

Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
Keep close tabs on student progress and talk to them regularly about how they are doing.
