I have students who are functioning far above grade-level. They have been tested and placed into the appropriate ALEKS curriculum. It is fantastic.
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
What to do with the kids who were far above grade-level.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
4 days per week
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
It is used for students who need more than grade-level instruction.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
Students work independently with ALEKS while I conduct grade-level math instruction.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I am able to focus on grade-level and low performing students and do not have to struggle to find resources for my whizzes.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
At least three evenings per week for their math homework.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
I show the parents the foundation of the program and how it is used to facilitate their child's continued math growth.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
This is their entire math homework load. The kids using ALEKS do not do the regular math homework.
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
ALEKS work is not graded. The students have already earned an A grade by mastering grade-level objectives.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
Yes. Students are expected to log their number of hours which is reflected in their movement through the lessons and objectives.
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
ALEKS is a win-win. Students working far above grade-level have had their academic needs met and challenged, and are very empowered by using ALEKS. They receive meaningful math instruction at their level, and do not sit bored and wasting their time.
