ALEKS allows students to learn at their own pace and reviews topics step-by-step so students can recognize and solve the problems. They learn from the interaction and techniques shown to improve their math skills and avoid frustration.

Scenario

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
Only a small percentage of students was passing the math portion on the Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress-Plus (ISTEP). Now they have achieved higher scores.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
1 day per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
45 minutes.

Implementation

How do you implement ALEKS?
We would like to utilize ALEKS in the four classrooms where we have interactive white boards so there is more interaction and the students can learn and achieve higher scores.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
No.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
A special course is setup to meet at the end of the day.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
Once per week.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
Because ALEKS was just introduced, we have not had the opportunity to get parents involved. Hopefully by next year, with more training, we can have more parental involvement.

Grading

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
No.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
There are no grades given since this is for high-ability students. Instead of going out for recess, they stay inside and work on ALEKS.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
No.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
We have seen improved math skills on tests and the ISTEP.
