Akron, IN Grade(s): K - 5 Scenario: Computers in Classroom, Home Access Purpose: Enrichment/Gifted and Talented ALEKS Portion of Curriculum: 35% Time Spent in ALEKS: 75 minutes per week; 20 hours per term ALEKS Course: Mathematics - LV 3 (with QuickTables), Mathematics - LV 4 (with QuickTables), Mathematics - LV 5 (with QuickTables), Middle School Math Course 2, Middle School Math Course 3, Algebra 1 Miriam Ruppel, Teacher When we are able to use ALEKS, I am excited about how it challenges the students.
Scenario What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS? High level students weren't being challenged enough. How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS? 3 days per week. What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used? 45 minutes. Implementation How do you implement ALEKS? I implemented ALEKS for my higher level math students in order to challenge them. Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order? No. How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS? I am able to work independently with my students. How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home? Weekly. How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS? I introduced the program and showed parents how to track their students' progress. Grading Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it? No. Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS? I try to set goals with students bi- monthly. Learning Outcomes Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen. I like the way ALEKS explains the topic and then gives the students practice. They get excited when they can keep it going. |
