Chris Allan, Teacher
My fifth graders are working on ALEKS in the computer lab two times per week for 45 minutes at a time. They also have the option to work on ALEKS at home, and some of them work on it in an after-school intervention program. In a recent sixth grade placement test for our school district, our Title 1 school scored better than 16 of the other 17 schools by about 75 percent, something that we, in part, attribute to having ALEKS. Of our 60 students, 16 are ready for either Pre-Algebra or Algebra, which are usually taken in the seventh grade at the earliest for our students.
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
We are a Title 1 school with some of the lower scores on state tests in our district.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
2 days per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
It is actually used as a prep time and in our afterschool intervention class.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
The students work at their own pace and I circulate the room and help and encourage where needed.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
Some topics now require less time for students to master.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
Regularly, though it is not required because about 15 percent don't have a computer at home, but it is encouraged all the time.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
We show parents the program at back to school night and talk about how well the kids do.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
They are required to do a certain number of topics before they are allowed to do QuickTables.
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
I used ALEKS as a part of a summer school program for students in grades 6-8. I run into these students occasionally, and they often brag to me how far they have gotten with ALEKS in their school year program. They are very proud.
