Our overall experience with ALEKS was great! I think that the program is well-developed and instrumental in improving my students' skills in the area of mathematics.

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
Initially, finding the time was challenging.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
5 days per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
30 minutes.

How do you implement ALEKS?
We designate a time slot just for ALEKS. Fourth grade students with disabilities participate in the ALEKS program from 9-9:30 am and the fifth grade students with disabilities participate from 10:30-11:00 daily.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
Students pick up their notebooks from the bookshelf and are assigned a computer to use. Students work on QuickTables on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays for 10 minutes each day. CRA mini-lessons are conducted two times a month. Conferences are conducted weekly. Students monitor their progress by charting pie pieces on a graph. Awards are given for mastering QuickTables and for mastering the most pie topics per week.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
We modified our approach to teaching by going from concrete to representational to abstract. We use manipulatives more.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
Students are given the information to work on ALEKS at home.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
Parents are notified about ALEKS and the results are shared with them.

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
At this time, ALEKS is not used in our grading system.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
Students are encouraged to progress. Incentives are given for adequate progress.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
I have seen a great deal of progress. Many of my students have become very competitive and enjoy earning pie pieces. The students are happy about their progress in ALEKS. If for some reason ALEKS is canceled for the day, the students are disappointed.

Best Practices

Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
Incentives are crucial.
