Agnes Annett Ghan, Academic Assistance Teacher
My students have been working with ALEKS for extra assistance in mathematics. The students seem to enjoy the program and it moves them along at individual pacing rates. It provides additional practice with skills in which they are weak. It works very well in our afterschool program as well.

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
No way to provide enough one-on-one help with strategies and skills in mathematics for the students who were below grade level.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
3 days per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
30 minutes.

How do you implement ALEKS?
We use it in Academic Assistance and in our afterschool program.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
Part of the class works on ALEKS while the other students practice with class work. Then the next time, they switch.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I have more time to work one-on-one with students as a result of implementing the ALEKS program in Academic Assistance.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
We don't involve parents in this program as it is used only during school or in the afterschool program.

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
The students are not graded on ALEKS.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
Yes, we print monthly progress reports to monitor their learning.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
The Academic Assistance students made steady gains in math between winter and spring benchmark testing as a result of the ALEKS program. They were proud of their progress.
