I am pleased to see my students working independently in ALEKS as they progress through a variety of mathematical skills at their own pace.
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
We have a very diverse range of students in my classroom, from students working at a first grade level to those working at a tenth grade level. It is extremely difficult to differentiate a single lesson to fit the diverse needs of our students.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
4 days per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
It acts as an extension.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
I use it as an extension for students who are ready to move on to higher-level math.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I no longer have to plan a completely separate lesson for my students who understand the concepts of our current unit.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
They are invited to work on ALEKS whenever they would like; it is up to their parents.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
Our parents pay for ALEKS, and are thus invested in the program.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
I do not use ALEKS in my grading system.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
I check their progress, but as long as they are learning and moving along through the units, I do not require any certain amount of progress.
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
I have seen my Talented and Gifted (TAG) students move quickly through new concepts at their own pace. My students enjoy tracking their progress on ALEKS and feel good about their continual improvement.
