John Mooy, Principal
We have been using ALEKS as a summer school math program for grades 3-8 for three summers. Each grade is brought into our computer lab for their math class. Kids could attend our summer classes from 1-6 weeks, and ALEKS served their needs for whatever period of time they were with us. As a value-added bonus, the parents were made aware that kids could use the program at home for at least two weeks after they left our summer school. I loved it because each student's experience was customized to their level of performance and need.

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
Lock-step programs which met the needs of the middle group of kids, but not the extreme performers at either end.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
5 days per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
60 minutes.

How do you implement ALEKS?
It was brought to our summer school program by a guest teacher who used it in his curriculum at another school. We will use it for the fourth summer in a row and are considering it as a full-time curriculum for at least one classroom this year.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
Kids work on their computers for the period, with a break halfway through. Hands-on manipulatives are also used during at least two periods per week.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
The teacher's role becomes one of facilitator instead of lecturer.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
They are not pressed to do work at home during summer school, except for students in great need.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
We hold a parent meeting to inform them of the program and its potential.

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
We don't grade summer school math at this time. For parents that want progress reports, we show them the progress for their students.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
Not at this time.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
ALEKS is useful in all areas, from short-term remediation for the needy to acceleration of the quick learners, no matter what school they are from or the background they had when they came to us.
