Brandee Tabacchi, Special Education Teacher
ALEKS really helps my students with number sense. Using concrete, abstract, and representational lessons, along with the computer program, really increases my students' scores. I would recommend ALEKS to other special education teachers.

Scenario

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
5 days per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
60 minutes.

Implementation

How do you implement ALEKS?
ALEKS is integrated into our hour and a half math class. This gives time for the mini lesson, QuickTables practice, and ALEKS; any time left is used for remediation.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
I cover them as the students need them.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
I break the students into groups according to their needs and the lessons being presented. One group starts on the computer while the other group has a mini lesson, and then they switch.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I use the mini lessons to drive instruction and introduce the standards. Then they have investigation time followed by computer time.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
We talk to them about it on a daily basis and speak with parents about the importance of using it at home. We give incentives for students that use ALEKS at home.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
Yes, we discuss it at the Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings and other functions.

Grading

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
No.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
ALEKS is not used in the grading system. We stay with the standards-based classroom grading system.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
No.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
My fifth graders have mastered multiplication and division since working with ALEKS. They love the program and enjoy the one-on-one attention they receive during their computer time.
