My overall experience with ALEKS has been a positive one. I use the program with one very advanced fifth grader and it has helped him to work at his level (which ended up being eighth grade) and identify areas of weakness. I also use ALEKS with my fifth grade class in general. Many students are encouraged by it and love it so much that they use it regularly at home as well. One of my students recently exclaimed, "ALEKS definitely helped me with the New York State math test questions!"
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
1-3 days per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
I originally used it only for several advanced math students, but seeing its benefits led me to open it up to all fifth graders.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
We use ALEKS one time per week as a whole group; advanced students use it 3-4 times per week depending on knowledge of content.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I differentiated and let students use ALEKS based on mastery of specific content areas.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
A minimum of one hour per week.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
Parents are involved as often and as much as they wish.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
Yes, I assign one hour per week.
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
I do not.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
No; however, I do regular assessments in ALEKS.
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
I have seen one student start at fifth grade and move to eighth grade in ALEKS. I also have several students who are using ALEKS for sixth grade now, and I have seen struggling students who keep trying. They love ALEKS and they love the access from home too. They enjoy seeing their pie fill up.
Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
If you have struggling students, get them on the course one grade-level lower until they feel confident.
