Jeanne Weisser, Teacher
This is my first classroom experience with ALEKS. I have three children working with the program and they love it! It helps me give them something appropriate and not just busy work during their math class. I have one student with a mentor, and one other that is a grade level above the rest, so being able to differentiate instruction is very important.
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
It is a challenge to meet the needs of these children with age and skill-level appropriate material.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
5 days per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
I use ALEKS as regular class work, and also as instruction review.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
ALEKS is used during my students' seatwork class time.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I did not have to modify my approach at all. ALEKS just relieves me of the challenge of creating appropriate work for these high-level learners.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
They are encouraged to work with ALEKS each night.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
While conferencing with parents, we encourage use at home. They are so thankful that it has been ordered for their children and are very supportive.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
It is encouraged, not required. It is their suggested math homework.
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
I have not gotten that far with it yet. It is new to me and I'm still getting used to checking in with the three students.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
I can see implementing this in the next quarter, but it is still too new for us currently. I will probably look to another teacher who has used it before to walk me through that.
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
Using ALEKS has definitely been proven to strengthen their skills, but once again, I don't think I am using it to its full potential. The students are motivated by the program. At times they are surprised that everything isn't so easy and they have to stop and think.
