How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
4 days per week
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
ALEKS was already implemented when I started teaching this class in January.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
I cover topics in the order that questions are asked. I also improvise and address concepts that I notice are weaknesses for students.
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
I have starter math questions which I go over. I answer questions and do examples. Students have some time to work on a weekly class assignment. The remainder of the time the students work on ALEKS.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I spend less time explaining the concepts.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
My students do not all have Internet access at home so they work on ALEKS in class. We do have afterschool help and computers available four times a week.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
I contact parents during parent conferences and as needed.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
Percent mastery and weekly progress in ALEKS are worth 60 percent.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
Their progress is measured in overall concept mastery and percentage of weekly progress based on concept mastery.
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
Most students show progress as demonstrated on their assessments. They can see their progress when mastering concepts in their pies.
Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
I find the quiz feature beneficial. I have a small class so I use the quiz feature to generate and individualize math concepts for each student.
