Many students have been successful in filling in gaps in their math understanding. Motivation is directly proportional to their results. Tying their weekly grade to their progress in ALEKS has motivated some students.
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
Students come to our school with varying backgrounds, and varying abilities in English. They were held back in math while they learned English. This year they were enrolled in regular math classes and came to my class for support. The bilingual feature in ALEKS helped them comprehend the math concepts.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
5 days per week
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
Students work at their own level and speed.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
Students choose their topics.
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
Half of the students are on the computers working in ALEKS, while the other half are doing homework. Then they switch.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I look at their ALEKS reports to see where they are.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
Many don't have access to ALEKS at home. It is all at school.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
I talk to parents and show them the program when they come in for parent conferences.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
I give them a weekly grade for progress in ALEKS.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
This year, I require at least two percent progress per week. I might increase this expectation next year.
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
Some students who would have been placed in Pre-Algebra without an opportunity to take Algebra 1, took the regular Algebra 1 course and passed the class with high A's; they did ALEKS on the side. Most students regularly check their progress and are proud of the percentages going up and the pie filling in.
